That the public cannot traverse the road to their seawall at B.V. is an eye pass

Dear Editor,

Please permit me to thank Elton McRae for his letter highlighting an atrocity to the people of B.V., and the public at large. (Residents of BV and Triumph cannot access the seawall from within the community – Stabroek News)

B.V. is a historical village and it is extremely disrespectful for anyone to high-handedly deny the descendants of those brave and fortitudinous people the right to access the Seawall, which is not only their birthright but a place that is very dear to most of us who grew up around there.

My Dad used to drive to the B.V., seawall, park his car on the dam besides the wall and go walking. (That is where I first learnt to drive.) Dad used to also take us there every Kartik Purnima at 4 am to bathe in the Ocean then do puja right on the Seawall. That Seawall holds a very special place in the hearts of not only Baronians but the villagers of Triumph and Mon Repos. Easter Monday on that Seawall, historic!

In Barbados, I can remember that no one can be denied public access to the beaches. Some homeowners and a hotel on the beach in Hastings were fencing off their beach front properties to prevent the public from walking through their property to access the beautiful waters/beach. The “stink” that other residents kicked up was so intense, the homeowners/hotel had to leave passages for the public to pass through.

That the public cannot traverse the road to their seawall at B.V. is an eye pass and  denying villagers their right to enjoy part of the beauty of their homeland. It is beyond my comprehension that this has happened and only Elton has seen it fitting to bring this to the public’s attention. Your ancestors will bless you, brother.

Sincerely,

N. Sahadeo
