Prioritise the nation’s health

Dear Editor,

The Ministry of Health should not be apprehensive in obtaining the dengue vaccine due to cost. The amount being spent this year on infrastructure and education is record breaking. This year’s budget is also the largest in the history of the country. Although the cost of the vaccine is high, the cost of the loss of our people and economic growth due to a major dengue outbreak is even higher.

Our first priority should be the health and safety of our people, especially the children. As usual, the Ministry of Finance has requested additional funds, these funds would be better spent on a nationwide vaccination program. The priorities of the government need to shift from focusing on poorly built roads, bridges and schools where corruption is becoming very evident, to a focus on preventing health problems within the population.

Sincerely,

Jamil Changlee
