Tevin Joseph, a 29-year-old vendor, of Lot 5A Meadowbrook, Georgetown, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Joseph pled not guilty to the charge.
It was alleged that on August 5, at Water Street, Georgetown, he had in his possession 10 grammes of methamphetamines. His lawyer, Joel Ross, told the court that his client, who is a father of one, had no direct contact with the substance as it was found some distance away from the stall from which he vends. However, the prosecutor objected to bail stating that during the search the narcotic was found hidden in an umbrella case in the accused’s stall.
Ross countered by maintaining that the substance was not found in his client’s possession or his stall. The attorney also told the court that his client suffers from a severe case of diabetes and asked for him to be placed on self-bail.
The prosecutor still voiced an objection, arguing that no special reasons were advanced and to consider the seriousness and nature of the offence, along with the possibility that Joseph may not return to court if placed on bail.
After taking both arguments into consideration, Magistrate Singh granted bail in the sum of $20,000 and adjourned the matter to September 13 for disclosure.
