Why does this country not honour its citizens’ contributions to its development?

Dear Editor,

While there is agreement with Gem Nascimento’s ‘Ways to honour our icons’ (SN August 8), as laid out in her letter, I still maintain the bestowing of national awards to Guyanese in recognition of nation building, across all divides, would make icons of all of us. So yes Gem, while there is merit in your suggestions, advocacy for it to go beyond, far and wide, must be actively pursued. The absence of National Awards for a protracted period is just unacceptable. A country which cannot recognise and honour its citizens’ contributions to the development of country and nation is seeing citizens as being unworthy, valueless and unbefitting of national recognition. This can be deemed anti-nationalistic and unpatriotic.

Sincerely,

Shamshun Mohamed
