GPL says suffered two trips at Vreed-en-Hoop substation Friday

On Friday, August 9, 2024, at approximately 12:46 pm, the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) says it experienced two distribution feeders trips, emanating from its  Vreed-en-Hoop Substation.

In a statement yesterday, GPL said that its technical team discovered entangled Medium Voltage (MV) conductors and a burnt switch at Vreed-en-Hoop. After completing remedial work, an attempt was made to re-energize the circuits, and at 2:41 pm, GPL said that  it experienced a “widespread outage”.

It said that its technicians further discovered that the cable, which connects the Vreed-en-Hoop Power Station to the Substation, was severely damaged and caused a short circuit to the system. Restoration and repair works commenced immediately, and at approximately 3:00 pm, the first area in Demerara was repowered. Incremental restoration and repairs continued until all areas were repowered at approximately 6:06 pm, GPL said.

“We understand the inconveniences associated with unplanned service interruptions and remain committed to eliminating these occurrences by working diligently towards ensuring a safe and reliable power supply to our customers”, the utility company added.
