The Moruca district in Region One is currently grappling with a surge in flu-like illnesses and dengue cases, according to Toshao Raul Hendricks.
Speaking with the Sunday Stabroek yesterday, Hendricks confirmed that alongside an unascertained flu-like sickness spreading through the area, there has been a noticeable increase in dengue cases. He noted that individuals who visited the district hospital reported being diagnosed with a different variant of the dengue virus, further complicating the situation.
When asked about the symptoms being experienced, Hendricks shared that both his wife and son had contracted the flu. They exhibited symptoms such as skin rashes and skin darkening, which have also been reported by others in the community.
The situation has escalated, with several persons who were previously hospitalized and released, needing to return for further medical care, some in critical condition. Hendricks confirmed that health officials are currently on the ground, conducting investigations and providing treatment to those affected.
The local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, as the community faces this dual health threat.
In a statement on its Facebook page on Friday, the Ministry of Health stated that a team of medical specialists wase dispatched to the area yesterday to investigate the rise in cases. Chief Medical Officer (acting), Dr Jeetendra Mohanlall, is leading the team.
