Sentencing for Friendship murder accused delayed

Zibon Williams who was arrested and charged for the murder of Joshua Ferdinand in 2021, appeared before Justice Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Georgetown High Court for his sentencing hearing which was delayed and set to a further date.

It was alleged that on December 20, 2021, the accused, Williams, murdered Ferdinand, to which he plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter on July 12, 2024.

Prosecutor Padma Dubraj, stated in her facts that on the night of the incident, at about 8:30, the accused was imbibing alcohol at a shop located at Parcel 310 Friendship, East Bank Demerara. Whilst there, an argument ensued between the accused and the aunt of the deceased, Isha Ferdinand.

During the argument, Ferdinand rushed at Williams and pushed him, causing him to fall into a nearby trench. Williams then climbed out of the trench and stabbed Ferdinand twice with a knife, to his abdomen and neck.

Ferdinand was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

During the court proceedings, a report from the probation officer was read which stated that Williams had a troubled childhood which affected his growth during his formative years. However during his time in prison he showed good conduct and attended educational classes.

The official sentencing for Williams will take place on August 29 at the High Court.
