In Trinidad: Man killed in Valencia; girl, 16, among 3 injured

(Trinidad Guardian) A shooting at Paradise Lane in Valencia on Friday night has left one dead and three people, including a 16-year-old student from Valencia Secondary School, injured.

The deceased has been identified as Jamal Cumberbatch, 21. Sherniqua Straker, 16, a student who received gunshot wounds to the stomach, remains warded at hospital in stable but critical condition.

Jamie Cumberbatch, 18, was shot in the buttocks, while Charmaine Cumberbatch, 51, her mother, was also shot. They were hospitalised up to late yesterday.

Police reported that around 11.45 pm on Friday, officers from the Valencia Police Station, PCs Malick, Lalite and WPC Simon, responded to a report of a shooting.

They made checks and found one man dead and three other people bleeding from gunshot wounds. They were rushed to the hospital.

The District Medical Officer visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Sangre Grande Hospital pending a post-mortem at Forensic Science Centre St James tomorrow.

CSI personnel processed the scene and retrieved several spent 9mm shells.

An eyewitness told police that Cumberbatch and his girlfriend fell asleep in bed. She later heard the dogs barking in the yard, followed by several loud explosions.

They ran for cover in another room. She made checks after and observed him lying motionless in the room while others sustained gunshot wounds. Investigations are continuing by officers of the Arouca Homicide Bureau.
