Woman dies in hit-and-run at Cromarty

An accident on Satur-day night along the Cromarty Public Road has left a woman dead and her family seeking justice after the driver fled the scene and is yet to be located. 

Dead is Simone Thompson, 45, of Lot 28 Cromarty Farm, Corentyne, Berbice.

The 8.15 pm accident involved motor car PHH 4644 which was being driven by a Number 69 Village, Corentyne man identified as ‘Boyo’.

Based on information gathered, the motor car was proceeding at a fast rate when the  left side of the car struck the pedestrian who was at the time crossing the road.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell on the road.

She was picked up by relatives in an unconscious condition and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Her body is presently at Ramoo’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, police yesterday stated that after the

collision, the driver “came out of the vehicle and ran away.” However, they said that the vehicle is presently at the Whim Police Station to be examined by a licensing and certifying officer.

Thompson’s daughter, Alicia Burnette, 21, yesterday, relayed that her mother came into the yard and spoke to her daughter after which she headed out to the road to get something from the car. It was then the accident occurred.

Burnette  said her mother’s boyfriend and others were on the road at the time of the accident.

“I heard everybody start holler for me and I come out and then I was on the landing and watch my mother lay on that road. When I go she lying lifeless, it’s not easy, her last breath she took when her children was there. We rushed her to the hospital where she was pronounced dead”, she said.

Thompson said that her mother suffered major neck injuries. “We are hoping for justice, it is hard to lose a mother, they say they are looking for him (driver), so I hope we get justice”, she said.
