A fire that was caused by an electric stove that had been left on and unattended, destroyed a two-storey home on Monday evening in Kwakwani, Berbice River, leaving nine homeless including a 71-year-old man.

According to a Guyana Fire Service (GFS) release, the two-storey building, owned by 71-year-old Michael Primo and occupied by him and eight family members, was completely destroyed. There were no injuries reported.

The GFS reported that it received an emergency call on Tuesday at about 18.10 hours about a fire at Lot 68 Second Phase Housing Scheme, Kwakwani, Berbice River. Firefighters responded promptly and arrived on the scene at 18.15 hours. They quickly worked to extinguish the flames, but despite their swift action, the building was completely destroyed.

According to the Fire Service, the fire was caused by an electric stove that had been left on and unattended, igniting a window curtain, and starting a fire, which then rapidly spread to other combustible materials within the house.

The Guyana Fire Service once again is urging the public to exercise caution when using electrical appliances to prevent such tragedies. “It is vital to ensure that all appliances are turned off and unplugged before leaving any room or building. Additionally, avoid overloading electrical sockets, such as drop cords and power strips, with multiple appliances and ensure that all wiring in homes or businesses meets approved safety standards.” To enhance fire safety, the GFS recommends the installation of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in homes and businesses, noting, “Being prepared and equipped can save lives and property in the event of a fire.”
