Man accused of setting fellow miner ablaze at Imbaimadai

Police are investigating a report of an attempt to commit murder which occurred on Monday, August 12, at Imbaimadai Landing, Upper Mazaruni River on James Thomas, known as ‘Wormie’, a 44-year-old miner.

Thomas was reportedly attacked by a 53-year-old miner who also resides at Imbaimadai Landing.

On the day in question, the victim and the suspect, who are known to each another, were consuming alcohol and a dispute erupted when the victim took hold of the suspect’s bottle of alcohol and ignored his demands to return it. In a fit of rage, the suspect seized the bottle, doused Thomas with its contents and set him ablaze. The flames engulfed Thomas, inflicting severe burns about his body.

Thomas was transported to the Imbaimadai Health Post, and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment. The burns sustained have been classified as second-degree.

The 53-year-old suspect was arrested and placed in custody as investigations continue.
