Police continuing search for driver in Cromarty hit and run

The police in Berbice are continuing the search for the driver of the car who fled the scene on Saturday evening after he was involved in an accident along the Cromarty Public Road leaving a woman dead.

Simone Thompson, 45, of Lot 28 Cromarty Farm, Corentyne, Berbice was fatally struck just around 8.19 pm.

Police had said that the accident involved motor car PHH 4644 which they had claimed was being driven by a Number 69 Village, Corentyne man identified as ‘Boyo’, with occupants Jainarine Chalitar, 27, of Lot 1 Dukestown, Corriverton, and Thompson.

However, Commander of Region Six, Shivpersaud Bacchus last evening clarified that “initially, police received info as to the name Boyo. However, the mother subsequently filed a missing report for Saif Khan.”

He stated, that presently police are searching for the suspected driver Saif Khan, 18, of Springlands.

Based on information gathered, the motor car was proceeding allegedly at a fast rate of speed when the front left side portion of the car collided with the pedestrian who was at the time crossing the road from the northern to the southern side.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell on to the road surface, where she suffered injuries about her body.

She was picked up by relatives in an unconscious condition and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
