Caribbean Schoolboys Boxing Championship
The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) has selected a 30-member squad in their bid to retain the coveted overall title at the 7th Winfield Braithwaite Caribbean Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Championship, which will start on Friday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
This was confirmed by GBA Technical Director Terrence Poole, who spoke to Stabroek Sport during an exclusive interview. According to Poole, the male contingent, which accounts for 26 members of the squad, is currently encamped at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Facility in Albouystown. The other four members are the female component.
Poole explained, “So far the encampment is going well; the boxers understand the purpose of them being here and the importance of retaining the championship. They have shown focus and enthusiasm, and we are looking forward to good results from them.”
Probed on the teams that are expected to test Guyana’s mettle, Poole disclosed, “Grenada, St. Lucia, I expect stiff competition from them. St. Lucia has already said that they are coming with ‘blood in their eyes’ to dethrone us. Grenada is already here, and they just came off the OECS Championship and had a reasonable performance. But at the same time, we are doing our homework to curtail that. We would have been at the OECS Championship and seen certain performances and are preparing our boxers for that. St Lucia in particular will be coming with blood in their eyes, but we are here to war to retain the title.”
The other teams that have signalled their intent to participate in the event are: Suriname, Jamaica, Barbados, and Trinidad and Tobago. Guyana is the defending overall champion, a title they have yet to surrender since the event’s inception.
