Protests sweep India over rape and murder of doctor

KOLKATA, India,  (Reuters) – Holding candles, hundreds of thousands of women marched through the night in cities across India, to protest the brutal rape and murder of a young female doctor in a hospital that has fueled anger over a lack of safety for women despite tough new laws.

GTU formally rejects gov’t offer

The GTU yesterday rejected the government’s multi-year package for teachers which included a 10% hike for this year amid signs of a deep division in the union Coretta McDonald, General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), confirmed in an interview with Stabroek News that the union has officially rejected the Government’s offer of a 10% salary increase for teachers.

Dear Editor, I see the usual drivel written about GuySuCo by Robin Singh in the Stabroek newspaper of August 11th 2024 in which he alleges that GuySuCo and its 8,000 workers receipt of another 4 billion tranche shows the PPP’s commitment to the industry and its workers and (sic) notwithstanding that the ‘wicked opposition is objecting to the new 4 billion tranche as a complete waste of national funds’.
