CWI Rising Stars U-17 2-Day
Guyana got their Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars 2-Day Championship off to a positive start yesterday against nemesis Trinidad and Tobago, as they trail by 108 runs at the Inshan Ali Park, Preysal in Trinidad.
After Guyanese skipper Jonathan Van Lange won the toss and inserted the home team, his bowlers began positively, getting the Trinidadian top order cheaply. At 27/3, things looked bleak for the hosts, but T&T skipper Brendan Boodhoo and Jayden Kent struck up a 94-run partnership to bring their side back into the game.
However, Romario Ramdeholl had other ideas and bowled Boodhoo for a well-played 52 (81 balls) after he had also prised out Kent (32). From there, Ramdeholl broke the back of the T&T innings, helping his side bowl them out for 202 in 65.4 overs. Ramdeholl grabbed 6/38 from his 17.4 overs while Van Lange, Darwin Joseph, and Emmanuel Lewis each took a wicket.
In response, by stumps, Guyana were 108 runs adrift of the Trinidadians total on 94/4 from 26 overs.
Much like the Trinidadians, the Guyanese top three batters fell cheaply, with only opener Rampersaud Ramnauth (18) getting a start.
However, Afraz Boodhoo (36 not out) and Ramdeholl (15 not out) carried Guyana out of danger with a valuable, unbroken stand after they had further lost Van Lange (8).
Speaking to Stabroek Sports at the end of the day’s play, Van Lange noted that while some of the guys are new to the format and the level, there were a lot of positives to be taken away from the first day.
“We had some points in the game where we could have shut them down or tightened up a bit, but that’s how the game goes sometimes. From the position that we’re in right now, we’re looking to carry on and have a good second day,” Van Lange revealed.
Boodhoo and Ramdeholl will resume batting today and look to overhaul the Trinidadians total and then some before bowling again in an attempt for an outright win. (Michelangelo Jacobus)
