Undefeated defending champion, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF), overcame a 0-2 deficit to defeat former winner Fruta Conquerors 3-2 when the KFC Elite League continued on Wednesday evening at the National Training Centre in Providence.
The Tucville-based unit slipped to their 12th defeat in the event, as Chris Macy and Stephon McDonald, in conjunction with an own goal, secured the come from behind victory.
In the space of a minute, the Fruta Conquerors were in control following conversions from Dwayne Jones and Shemar Koulen. Jones fashioned the opener with a 23rd-minute strike, while Koulen doubled the lead a minute onwards.
The advantage proved to be short-lived as GDF restored parity to proceedings in the space of two minutes. Macy reduced the deficit as he etched his name on the score-sheet in the 39th minute, before McDonald made his presence felt as he found the back of the net in the 41st minute. The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval.
The only conversion of a gritty second half decided the outcome, as the come from behind win was then sealed in the 83rd minute via an own goal.
Due to the victory, GDF climbs to 46 points and extends their lead atop the standings to four points over second-placed Slingerz FC. On the other hand, Fruta Conquerors remain rooted to seventh place on 16 points.
