Traditional giants Sparta Boss, Bent Street, Gold is Money, and North East La Penitence advanced to the next round when the inaugural edition of the ‘Bend it Like Beckham’ Futsal Championship commenced on Wednesday evening at the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue.
Sparta Boss dismantled Touches 5-0. On the other hand, Bent Street came from behind to defeat Laing Avenue 3-1. Meanwhile, Gold is Money overcame Team Cruel 5-4 on penalty kicks after regulation time 2-2. Also, North East La Penitence downed V-Tech 3-1.
In other results, North Ruimveldt crushed East Side 6-0, while California Square downed Hustlers 3-1, and Festival City defeated Tiger Bay 2-0. Also, Stabroek Ballers overcame Albouystown 3-1 on penalty kicks after regulation time ended score-less.
The tournament continues on Wednesday at the same venue. The winner of the event will pocket $1,000,000 and the championship trophy, while the second, third, and fourth-place finishers will receive $500,000, $300,000, and $200,000, respectively, and the corresponding accolade.
