Emergency work will soon begin to replace the collapsed bridge at the Lewis Manor Police Outpost in Berbice. Engineers from the Ministry of Public Works have conducted an assessment of the damage and construction is expected to commence soon.
Regional Commander of Police Shivpersaud Bacchus told Stabroek News yesterday evening that the bridge was undermined by excess water from the canal. While the water remained there for a while, the bridge was under observation. Overtime, the bridge began to lean on one side before collapsing. The bridge collapsed on Thursday and a piece of wood was placed across the remaining structure for temporary use until reconstruction is completed.
