A fire of unknown origin on Thursday evening completely destroyed a two-storey house along the Canje Public Road. However, the fire service was able to put out the fire before it could spread to neighbouring houses and businesses.
The two-storey wooden and concrete house on the Canefield, East Canje Berbice Public Road once housed the popular Raj Mangal Liquor Shop. But according to residents in the area, the house has been unoccupied for several years now.
Residents yesterday told Stabroek News that they were awakened by the smoke just after midnight and on investigating discovered that the entire house was engulfed in flames. They immediately contacted the New Amsterdam Fire Station.
Subsequently fire tender No. 74 and fire tender No. 110 headed by Divisional Officer Kirkland Harry and six other ranks arrived at the location, went into action and extinguished the fire. They were not able to save the house.
The New Amsterdam Fire Station’s action was also boosted by a fire tender from the Rose Hall Estate, which was headed by Imran Ishmael and four other ranks. Additionally, a Guyana Power and Light crew and EMTs from the New Amsterdam Fire Service were also present at the scene monitoring the situation.
Residents yesterday stressed that the firefighters worked together to ensure the fire was out and did not spread to nearby houses and a supermarket which is located closeby.
