One man is now in police custody after police responded to a report of a protest and blockage on Dennis Street, Sophia allegedly caused by the rejection of the proposed teacher’s salary increase.
According to a police press release, on arrival at the location, police found the road blocked with about 15 tyres, suspected to have been placed there by three men on two motorcycles. Police said they chased and apprehended one of the suspects, who is in custody. According to the police, it is alleged that teachers in the area paid the men to commit the act.
A search was conducted where the road was blocked and 16 makeshift Molotov cocktails, two-gallon bottles of what appeared to be a flammable substance (gas or diesel), and several other old tyres were found, the release said. Further investigations are ongoing.
