Forty-year-old Brenton Charles of Lot 9 D’Urban and Camp streets, Werk-en-Rust, George-town, appeared on Friday before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court where he was charged with two counts of simple larceny.
Charles plead not guilty to both charges.
It was alleged that on Thursday, August 1, at New Market Street, Georgetown, he stole one television set valued $100,000, two amplifiers valued $300,000, speaker boxes valued $48,000, and $10,000 cash, all belonging to Sadiq Wahab.
It was also alleged that on August 14, he stole $2,200,000 belonging to Lokesh Doodnauth.
Charles’ attorney, Yuborn Allicock, told the magistrate that his client was before the court for traffic offences and not for what was being alleged, and also, that there is nothing before the court that proves that his client is a threat to the two victims. In his final submission for bail, the attorney told the magistrate that Charles was prepared to subject himself to any conditions the court deemed fit.
The prosecutor, however, objected to bail on the grounds that Charles was before the court for similar offences and was found guilty in one matter. He was also before the court for a break and enter offence.
Charles made his disagreement with the prosecutor’s statement known by blurting out in court that he was never ever convicted, however the prosecutor stated that the defendant was observed by CCTV [closed circuit television] entering both the victims’ vehicles and removing the aforementioned items.
The magistrate then asked for the CCTV footage to be presented in court, the prosecutor was unable to provide it and instead, requested to be able to provide the footage at a later date.
After considering both arguments, Magistrate Singh granted bail in the sum of $300,000 and $200,000 respectively, totalling $500,000 with the condition that he report to the Alberttown police station.
The matter was adjourned to September 13 for disclosure of the CCTV footage.
