Proud indigenous woman:

Recently Marie Raphael was featured on the Guyana Tourism Authority Facebook’s page to mark World Indigenous Day, observed on August 9th. Raphael described herself as “a proud Lokono Arawak woman from Pakuri (St Cuthbert’s Mission)”. She said this year’s theme, ‘Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact’, profoundly resonated with her and the efforts she has made to preserve and support the progression of the indigenous way of life in her village. “Protecting the rights of our indigenous people isn’t just a cause; it’s a responsibility. Our wisdom, our connection to the land—these are not relics of the past but lessons for the future. I will continue to be a voice, championing the respect for |our people and our culture,” she said.
