The Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development yesterday said that it gave cash grants to some 2,000 Moruca Sub-region One residents for them to “kickstart their small businesses”.

While the post on the Ministry of Housing Water’s Facebook page did not indicate the sum of the grants, Stabroek News understands that each resident received $100,000.

The ‘Cash Grant Distribution for Regional Economic Transformation’, the ministry said, formed part of a two-day visit to the sub-region over the weekend.

The visit was led by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal, Minister of Local Government and Regional Development and Minister within the Ministry Anand Persaud.
