New Amsterdam man missing after family outing, swim at Canje Creek

A family of New Amsterdam is currently searching for a 42-year-old man who went missing while swimming in the Canje Creek during a family outing on Sunday.

Rayon Captain also known as “Chippy”, self-employed of Lot 401 Patrick Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam was last seen just around 5.15 pm on Sunday by relatives. At the time, he was swimming in the Canje Creek at New Forest, East Canje Berbice.

According to Captain’s wife, Ramrattie Williamson, 61, the family decided to head to New Forest for a family outing on Sunday.

“I go in the water first and then everybody else come in the water. Rayon go in the water, he come out and then he jump in back that he go swim across the river [creek] and he reach to the end and turn back,” she said. “We see like he dive, but then he disappear.”

Williamson said that they then began searching the area of the creek where Captain was swimming but were not able to locate him. “We na see he back unto now, we na see he back,” she said.

“When we see he go down and he not coming up, it had plenty boys been there and them jump in and start search around and a boat was passing at the same time and the boat go around and looking and looking and we na find him…”

The family eventually filed a report at the Reliance Police Station.

Breaking into tears, the woman said that Captain was a loving person who was extremely kind to her children. “We na had no problem, no problem,” she sobbed.

Meanwhile, the police yesterday said that the area was canvassed for CCTV cameras but none were seen. According to them, the scene was processed and photographs were taken of the environment which showed several empty alcohol bottles and empty cups.

“Several checks were made in the Canje Creek and surrounding areas,” the police added.

The search resumed yesterday utilizing the Region Six Democratic Conucil boat.
