Caribbean Schoolboys Boxing Championship
Guyana retained their overall title for a record extending seventh time as the curtains came down on the Winfield Braithwaite Caribbean Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championship at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue on Sunday.
Guyana, who have yet to surrender the overall crown since the event’s inception six years prior, ended on 38 points, nine points ahead of silver medallist Trinidad and Tobago. St Lucia rounded out the top three on 13 points, relegating Suriname to fourth place by a mere point. Barbados and Antigua and Barbuda ended in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Guyana’s title charge was engineered by late victories from Joffes Jackson, Ken Harvey, and Chance Niles. Jackson defeated Elroy Canchon (St. Lucia) in the Juniors (75Kg final), while Harvey bested Kurt Kirton (St. Lucia) in the Juniors (60Kg final). Likewise, Niles overpowered Med Charles (T&T) in the Juniors (70Kg final). In the individual side of the presentation, Guyana’s Ezekiel Bancroft was awarded the Best Overall Boxer title. He also copped the accolade for best boxer in the Schoolboys division.
Meanwhile, Guyana’s was adjudged the best boxer in the Junior division. Similarly, Mahadeo Singh and Reyah John of Trinidad and Tobago copped the best boxer accolade for the Youth and Women’s divisions, respectively.
