Petterson-Griffith, Sanmoogan best overall lifters as 26 records tumble

GAPLF Raw Nationals Championship

Guyana’s 93kg squat world record holder Carlos Petterson-Griffith has once again demonstrated his expertise as he copped the best male overall lifter prize, while Sarah Sanmoogan won the female crown when the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation held its RAW Nationals Championship on Sunday.

Staged at the Guyana Defence Force, Camp Ayanganna, Petterson-Griffith was in fine form as he shattered four records and Sanmoogan two, as 26 new national records were set on an exquisite day.

Nangita Seenarine, Mariah Bacchus, Trevor Callender, Joseph Stoll, Wazim Mohamed, Farouk Abdool, Richard Fredericks, and Duarte Hetsberger also tasted success as they displayed the fruits of their labour, hence deciding their own faith. 

Carlos ‘The Showstopper’ Petterson-Griffith got the fans on their feet as he successfully performed a deadlift of 365kg competing in the 105kg Men’s Open Raw category. It was an extraordinary display by the Guyanese strongman, as he also produced a squat of 320kg and a bench-press of 180kg for a total of 865 kg, which were all new national records.

Sanmoogan competed in the 69kg Women’s Junior Raw class and had a record bench press of 87.5kg, twice.

Seenarine set a new national squat record of 100kg, bench-press of 52.5kg, deadlift 115kg for a total of 267.5kg, competing in the Women’s Open 47kg weight class.

Trevor Callender set a new national bench press record of 92.5kg , competing in the 74kg Men’s Master 2, while Mariah Bacchus, who contested in the 76 kg Women’s Junior weight class, squatted 125kg, bench pressed 55.0 kg and deadlifted 122.5kg for a total of 302.5kg – all new national records.

Richard Fredericks, who represented Iron House gym and was coached by former national powerlifter Mark Seymour, set four new national records in the 83kg Men’s Master 4 class. He had a best squat of 122.5kg, bench press of 87.5kg, and deadlift of 160kg, totalling 370.0kg.

Hetsberger, who competed in the 83kg Men’s Master 1 category, produced a best bench press of 145kg, a deadlift of 240kg for a total of 560.0kg – all new national records.

In the 93 kg Men’s Master 3 class, Stoll set four national records, producing a top squat of 125kg, bench-press of 70kg, and deadlift of 167.5 kg for a total of 362.5kg.

Wazim Mohamed now owns the national bench press record in the 93 kg Men’s Master 1 class with 167.5kg, while Abdool set a new national squat record in the 120+kg Men’s Master 2 class with his top squat being 227.5kg.
