The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) recently presented 27 bursary awards to union members’ children who wrote the National Grade Six Examinations earlier this year.

A release from the union said the ceremony was held at its head office in Kingston, Georgetown, last Friday and saw the children, whose parents are part of the GAWU’s various bargaining units, receiving their awards.

According to the release, GAWU President Seepaul Narine congratulated the parents and their extended families for their contributions, recognising that they played a role in their children’s achievements. He stated that the union, like their families, was proud of the students’ successes, and he noted that GAWU places immense value on education.

The bursary award, he said, was one of the several benefits the union offers its members and shared that GAWU remains committed to its members’ all-round welfare and well-being, and the bursary award presentation was one such manifestation, the release said.

He told the awardees that they have entered a new chapter of their academic lives and urged them to continue to be diligent and committed to their studies. He also shared that secondary school will be different, but hard work, dedication, and perseverance are important qualities to embrace along the journey, it added.

“…Education is critical in today’s environment, and the fast-moving developments of today and tomorrow re-emphasises the need for and importance of education,” the release quoted Narine as saying. He promised that the union will continue learning about their progress in secondary school and anticipates seeing some of the awardees among the outstanding students at the CXC exams.

According to the release three awardees also received a double award. The GAWU Cooperative Credit Union Society Limited provided the second award to the best-performing students at the Demerara estates, the Berbice estates, and the union’s non-sugar bargaining units.
