The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) will host a training camp from tomorrow (August 22) to September 4, which will be facilitated by High Performance Coach Alexandre Gomes.

While the training camp is geared for elite level players with great technical ability, according to a release from the GTTA, the central objective of this engagement is “to further provide and expose national table tennis team members and coaches to high performance training and methodologies, improving the technical tactical and strategic development of our players, improving our players and national team’s performance in competitions, to assist our association with the training, mentoring, and preparation.”.

The release continued, “The training engagement will also allow us to discuss with and explore ways in which we can build a partnership with Coach Alexandre Gomes in view of assisting with our players and coach’s development or having him here in Guyana here to help with preparing our team for an extended period for key tournaments, in addition to assisting with preparing some of our key players, Shemar Britton, Natalie Cummings, and Chelsea Edghill, who have qualified to participate in the Panam Championships scheduled for October 13th to 30th in El Salvador.”

Additionally, players from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, and Jamaica have expressed an interest in participating in the training camp.

Coach Gomes is a top-level proven coach who is well respected in the table tennis fraternity globally and has worked with Quadri Aruna (a world top-10 player from Nigeria), several national team members from the USA, China, Europe, and Asia, and has also led the National Team of Peru as Head Coach for several years.

One of the lead coaches at the 888 Table Tennis Club in Burlingame and San Diego, which is a United States high performance training centre, Guyana’s Britton has credited and paid homage to his work in helping him to qualify for the Panam Games 2023.

Sessions are scheduled to commence tomorrow with two sessions daily, while coach Gomes is slated to arrive in Guyana today.
