Javed Baksh, 32, was arrested by police for the possession of 1,002 grammes of marijuana on Tuesday during a police operation at 7th Avenue, Bartica.

According to police, Baksh was arrested by ranks in Regional Division Number Seven when police acting on information received, conducted a raid between 17.00 and 18.00 hours yesterday at 7th Street, Bartica, and found Baksh to be in possession of 1,002 grams of suspected marijuana.

When the ranks approached a two-storey building in a fenced compound, they observed a man who they later learnt was Baksh, run and toss a plastic bag between a water trestle.

The bag was retrieved and upon inspection was found to contain a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. Baksh was arrested and taken to Bartica Police Station. The narcotic was weighed in his presence and amounted to 1,002 grammes.

A video interview was conducted with Baksh, who, under caution, stated that he purchased the cannabis with the intention to resell it. He was placed into custody where he remains pending charges.
