CWI Rising Stars U-17 2-Da
Guyana is currently in a precarious situation at 49/5, trailing by 139 runs against league leader Barbados in their third round of the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars U-17 2-Day at Gilbert Park in Trinidad and Tobago.
After an emphatic win against the Leeward Islands in their last match, the Guyanese lost their way by stumps despite turning in a decent bowling performance earlier on day one by bowling out the Barbadians for 188 in 60.2 overs.
The Bajans won the toss and elected to bat but lost an early wicket as Devon Wharton bowled Zachary Carter for a duck off the second ball of the innings.
However, starts from Damarko Wiggins (22) and skipper Joshua Dorne (22) ensured that there was no early collapse as the duo shared a 42-run second wicket stand before left arm spinner Gulcharran Chulai got into his work. He bowled Dorne to trigger the loss of three quick wickets as Barbados plummeted from 42/2 to 81/5, with Romario Ramdeholl and Afraz Budhoo chipping in with a wicket each to go with Chulai’s second, that of Jordan Griffith.
A couple of starts from lower-order batsmen Kevion Newton (37), Gadson Bowens (27) and Shaquan Belle (24) ensured that the Bajans got to a respectable total of 188, which might yet prove to be a winning one.
Chulai continued his wicket-taking form, finishing with 3-42 from his 17 overs. Meanwhile, Riyad Latif had 2-28 (8 overs), while Ramdeholl, Van Lange, Wharton, and Budhoo had a wicket each.
In response, the Guyanese top order fell in a heap, getting to a troubling 49/5 in 16.4 overs by the time the umpires called stumps.
Only opener Rampersaud Ramnauth with a 50-ball 21 got a start as Carter returned with the ball to snare 3-20 (6 overs). He accounted for Parmeshwar Ram (4), Budhoo (7), and Ramnauth.
By the time Romesh Bharrat was out caught off the bowling of Damani Roach, the Guyanese were spared further losses as the umpires decided that it would be the final action of the day.
When play resumes today, Jonathan Van Lange is unbeaten on five with Adrian Hetmyer and the dependable Riyad Latif still to come. They will be hoping to make a significant dent in the deficit of 139 runs today before making Barbados bat again.
