– set for October 11-13

The 2024 edition of the Prime Minister T20 Softball Cup was launched yesterday at the Muslim Youth Organisation facility in Woolford Avenue, Georgetown.

The T20 extravaganza, which is coordinated by the Georgetown Softball Cricket League, is slated for October 11-13 and will be held in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister and Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport.

The tournament will be contested in the male over-50, over-40, and open divisions, along with the female open category.

Teams from New York and Canada are expected to rub shoulders with their Guyanese counterparts. In the 2023 edition, Regal teams of Guyana emerged victorious in both the Legends and Masters segments, while Ariel All-Stars also of Guyana were crowned champions in the open class. 4R Lioness won the female category.

Among the teams that have registered so far in the over-50 section are: Regal, GTA Storm, Trophy Stall, NYSCL, Aash Decor, Parika Defenders, Jai Hind, and Rockaway, while Regal, Fisherman, Success, Ariel, Hibernia, and Softball Cricket Canada will contest the over-40 section.

In the open division, Regal, Speedboat, Name Brand, PG Blue Steels, Premier Insurance, Ariel Knightriders, and Tourism will battle for supremacy.

Meanwhile, 4R Lioness, Yarrowkabra Top Strikers, Arrowhead Strikers, CJ Warriors, Supreme Stars, Swan, Parika Rising Stars, Invaders Ladies, NO 64 Knight Rider, and Kuru Kururu Panthers will feature in the female segment.

At the launching, President of the GSCL Inc., Ian John, expressed his delight and appreciation for having this year’s edition. He also thanked the Honourable Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips for his attendance and his ministry’s commitment to the mega softball event.

According to John, all the preliminary round matches will be played in Georgetown, with all four finals to be staged at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary. 

Prime Minister Mark Phillips, in his remarks, stated that he was pleased with the success of the tournament over the years and is looking forward to another successful competition.

The winning team in the over-50, over-40, and open divisions will each take home a trophy and $600,000, while one electronic motorcycle will be given to the MVP in each of the three categories. The champion female team will receive $200,000.
