Body of man who disappeared during swimming outing discovered in Canje Creek

The body of the 42-year-old man, who went missing while swimming in the Canje Creek during a family outing on Sunday last, was discovered on Wednesday.

Dead is Rayon Captain also known as “Chippy”, 42, self-employed of Lot 401 Patrick Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam who was last seen just around 5.15 pm on Sunday by relatives swimming in the Canje Creek at New Forest, East Canje Berbice.

According to Captain’s wife, Ramrattie Williamson, the family had decided to head to New Forest for a family outing on Sunday last. “I go in the water first and then everybody else come in the water. Rayon go in the water, he come out and then he jump in back [and said] that he go swim across the river and he reach to the end and turn back.”

However, she said that on his return he seemed strange. “We see like he dive but then he disappear,” she said.

Williamson said they then began searching the area but were unable to locate him.

“… It had plenty boys been there and them jump in and start search around and a boat was passing at the same time and the boat go around and looking and looking and we na find him…, she said.

The family eventually filed a report at the Reliance Police Station and the police continued their search and were able to discover the body just around 9 am on Wednesday.

Williamson said yesterday that a post-mortem examination will be carried out on Friday. However, she confirmed that there were no marks of violence on her husband’s body.
