Housing ministry rebuts opposition claims regarding Mocha-Arcadia squatters

The Ministry of Housing and Water (MoHW) has issued a strong rebuttal to claims made by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton and journalist Adam Harris regarding the land from which squatters were removed for the construction of the highway at Mocha-Arcadia (Cane View).

The ministry asserts that the land in question is designated solely for the highway project and will not be allocated for any other use. In a statement, the ministry emphasised that there are no plans to assign the land to any individual or organisation. Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, previously addressed this issue in an article published in the Stabroek News on August 13, stating, “The lands are not allocated to anyone… there are no structures on the land.”

MoHW criticised the statements by Norton and Harris as misleading and suggested they aim to incite racial tensions. It noted that the majority of compliant squatters were relocated to developed housing areas at no cost, and compensation was provided, transforming them into legal landowners.

“Some squatters who feel wronged by the government’s actions have initiated legal proceedings, which are currently pending in the High Court,” the ministry added.
