CWI Rising Stars U-17 2-Day
Guyana stumbled to a crushing defeat yesterday against Barbados in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars U-17 2-Championship, losing by an innings and 46 runs at Gilbert Park, California, in Trinidad and Tobago.
Barbados, having made what seemed like a par total of 188 all out in their first innings on Wednesday, had Guyana teetering on 49/5 at stumps.
When Guyana resumed their innings, neither the Guyanese nor its skipper Jonathan Van Lange managed to add to their overnight scores as Zachary Carter picked up right where he left off on Wednesday by taking an early wicket, that of Van Lange for five.
Guyana then plummeted from 49/6 to 66 all out inside 25.1 overs as Carter struck twice more to finish with excellent figures of 6-24 (10.1 overs) to spearhead the bowling attack for Barbados.
Felled for a dismal 66, the Guyanese were made to follow on, batting a second time.
Still adrift of Barbados first innings by 122 runs, the Guyanese made little improvement on their first attempt with the bat, this time around scoring 10 more than their first innings total of 66 to suffer a heavy loss.
On this occasion, Xaundre Baptiste was the destroyer, collecting a miserly 4-8 from 4.1 overs, sending the Guyanese crashing to 76 all out in 23.1 overs.
Much like the first innings, Guyana’s top scorer was opener Rampersaud Ramnauth with 21 from 29 balls, while the only other batter to put up their hand was Emmanuel Lewis, scoring 16 from 26 balls.
Baptiste was well supported by R’Jai Gittens, who captured 3-6 (five overs), while Carter was again among the wickets, returning 3-33 from his 9 overs.
The heavy defeat means that Guyana, who were third on the table after the first two rounds, will more than likely drop down in the standings at the end of the round.
