There is an overwhelming sense of relief being felt by teachers, students and families upon the signing of the teachers’ deal. The teachers will receive nearly 30 % increases in pay, over the next three years. GTU President Mark Lyte has done a magnificent job in extracting these new wages from the government. No other sector in Guyana has received comparative wage increases as the teachers have.
However, many Guyanese were shocked at the venom directed at Mr. Lyte with stunning and unfounded accusations. This acerbic criticism emanated not from teachers or their families, but from people that are supposed to be Dr. Lyte’s associates. I drive a taxi and almost every one of my customers is glad the strike is over. There are two dominant emotions expressed since the strike ended……gratitude and relief!
