GCA 2-Day competition

The restart of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/ Friends of Cricket 2nd Division 2-Day competition was marred by rain which caused a lengthy delay to the start of the Bel Air Rubis versus Ace Warriors match yesterday at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) Ground, Thomas Lands, Georgetown.

With action in the competition resuming after almost three months, Bel Air Rubis won the toss and elected to bat, however, they would not start their innings until well into the afternoon session.

When the game finally got underway, it was quite an underwhelming effort with the bat from Bel Air Rubis as Junior Phillips captured 5/33 from 9 overs to help the Ace Warriors rout their opponents for a paltry 101 all out inside 34 overs.

It did not take the Ace Warriors long to make inroads into Bel Air’s batting line-up as Ajay Gainda was the first to go caught behind off the bowling of Phillips.

Three more Bel Air wickets followed quickly as Phillips added two more wickets to his name in quick time with Trevon Boston accounting for the other.

Bel Air teetering on 24/4 in just the 7th over were in even more dire straits as wickets started falling like dominoes, and at 43/7, things were looking even bleaker.

Despite being in that precarious position, an unbeaten 44 from lower order batter Rajendra Singh and a partnership of 52 between Singh and Patrick Apana (11) pushed Bel Air close to a somewhat respectable total in the end.

Singh who hit three fours and a six in his 44 not out, was one of three batsmen who got to double digit scores, the others Apana with 10 and Ajay Gainda who scored 10 at the top of the innings. Singh and Apana managed to take Bel Air from 43/7 to 95 before Apana was dismissed. His dismissal sparked the end of the innings as the last two wickets fell for the addition of just six runs with Singh running out of partners.

The end of Bel Air’s innings coincidentally was also the last action of the day as the umpires called stumps.

When play resumes today, fair weather provided, it will be Ace Warriors turn with the bat as they will be pressing for an overall victory at the Malteenoes Ground.
