There must be an independent EIA on the proposed waste management operations at Coverden

Dear Editor, We write in solidarity with Cover-den and its community advocates, Penelope Howell and Audreyanna Thomas, who have exposed alleged breaches of the Environmental Protection Act (EP Act) and rule of law in the awarding of an environmental permit to Professional Waste Solutions Incorporated (PWSI) by the EPA to operate an on-shore oil and gas waste processing facility in their community.

Duck eggs case referred to DPP

Three months after the initial report in June, CEO of the Guyana Livestock and Development Authority (GLDA) Dwight Walrond confirmed to Stabroek News yesterday that the investigation into allegations of sabotage involving a large number of duck eggs at the  hatchery has been forwarded by the police to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Workshop on oil spill contingency planning underway

A four-day workshop on oil spill contingency planning began yesterday, according to the Department of Public Information (DPI) The workshop, being held at the Guyana Police Force Headquarters, is being conducted by the Regional Activity Centre/Regional Marine Pollution Emergency, Information, and Training Centre for the Wider Caribbean Region (RAC/REMPEITC-Caribe).

Benn says awaiting update on Brutus probe

Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn on Monday told Stabroek News that he is awaiting an update from the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) on the probe that was launched following an allegation of financial impropriety made against Deputy Commissioner (ag) of police Calvin Brutus.
