World U-20 Championships

The opening day of the World U-20 Athletics Championships in Lima, Peru, will be one to forget for Guyana as several athletes fell short at the first hurdles of their respective events at the Estadio Atlético de la Videna.

First up was the mixed relay quartet, which consisted of Nerissa McPherson, Enoch Monroe, Tianna Springer, and Dhneilson Gill. They could only cross the finish line in sixth place in Heat 2 of the event with a time of 3:26.06, not doing enough to book a spot in the final.

Meanwhile, Guyana had two representatives in the Men’s 100m event. Local lad Ezekiel Newton and USA-based Jackson Clarke took to the track, but neither could make it out of their respective heats. Newton clocked 10.80s while Clarke was marginally better with 10.68s, but sadly neither time was good enough to push them into the semi-finals.

Guyana’s golden girl in the Women’s 100m sprint, Athaleyha Hinckson, was off her best form, stopping the clock at 12.01s and was sixth in Heat 1.

Hinckson could not progress with that result and will not be adding a World U20 medal to her already growing collection.

While that is the end of Newton, Hinckson, and Clarke’s participation at the championships, today will provide chances for McPherson, Springer, and Malachi Austin to make their marks in the Women and Men’s 400m events.

McPherson and Springer will compete in the women’s 400m, while South American U20 gold medallist Austin will be looking for an excellent performance in the men’s event.
