(CMC) – Alana Reid secured her place in history as the fourth consecutive Jamaican to claim the women’s 100m title at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships, capturing gold yesterday in Lima, Peru.
Reid, who entered the competition as the world Under-20 leader, clocked a time of 11.17 seconds to triumph over a competitive field. She finished ahead of Adaejah Hodge from the British Virgin Islands, who took silver with a time of 11.27 seconds, and Kishawna Niles from Barbados, who claimed the bronze after stopping the clock at 11.37 seconds.
This victory extends Jamaica’s remarkable dominance in the event, following in the footsteps of her compatriots Briana Williams, who won in Tampere, Finland, in 2018, and Tina Clayton, who captured the title in both Nairobi, Kenya, in 2021, and Cali, Colombia, in 2022.
There was no such luck for the Caribbean in the men’s equivalent, as the Jamaican pair of Deandre Daley and Gary Card finished fourth and sixth, respectively.
Daley clocked 10.33 seconds, while Card registered 10.44 seconds behind eventual winner Bayanda Walaza of South Africa, who clocked 10.19 seconds.
Thailand’s Puripol Boonson secured the silver medal after finishing second in a time of 10.22 seconds. South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana secured the bronze following his third-place finish in a time of 10.26 seconds.
