Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag, on Tuesday launched the One Guyana Digital programme in Region Two, enabling Guyanese to become website developers.
The programme was launched at the Anna Regina Secondary School and Charity Secondary School.
She explained that the programme falls under the Ministry of Public Service, where she previously served as minister, while highlighting that it aligns with the government’s promise to provide 20,000 scholarships through the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL).
The minister said that to date this goal has been surpassed, with over 28,000 Guyanese benefitting from the initiative.
The programme, a collaborative effort between the Government of Canada and the Government of Guyana spans eight months. It is offered free of charge to the people of Guyana. Upon completion of the programme, participants are guaranteed employment.
Parag also noted that participants will acquire the skills necessary to develop various platforms that will enhance their employability. As such, she urged the youths to make full use of the opportunity provided to them.
Phillipe Walker, a representative of the programme, told participants that it is an intensive online post-secondary full-stack developer training programme. It will see participants undergoing a transformational journey toward job readiness and placement.
The programme offers comprehensive training from an accredited Canadian university. Graduates will be qualified to competently perform the duties of a full-stack developer, including PHP programming, JavaScript programming, mobile application development, Python programming, website security, and front-end website programming.
The certificate programme consists of four courses, which will be completed over two consecutive semesters (eight months), with two courses per semester. These courses have no prerequisites and can be taken in any order.
