Propa GT Local Wines, a small producer of fruit wines, last week received the Made in Guyana certification from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), following a demanding and rigorous process.
In an exclusive interview with Stabroek News, its founder Abigale John opened up about the challenges, regulatory hurdles and finally the triumph of making a significant mark in the local fruit wine industry. John’s journey into the world of winemaking began in an unconventional manner. Originally, she owned a t-shirt printing and embroidery business, AJ Signs, and was unexpectedly introduced to winemaking by her uncle Aubrey in 2019. Despite initial reservations, John’s entry into the wine industry proved fortuitous. When the COVID-19 pandemic altered consumer behaviours, John pivoted from personalizing t-shirts to promoting wines, seizing the opportunity to bring joy to virtual celebrations and intimate gatherings.
The path to certification was anything but straightforward. John had to meet rigorous standards set by the GNBS. This involved aligning product claims with Guyana Food and Drug Administration test results, updating business registration, maintaining impeccable production and sales records, and demonstrating local workforce engagement and ownership. The certification process, while challenging, was a testament to her commitment to quality and authenticity. This certification has been awarded for Red Silhouette, Bliss, Night Nurse, Miss Addicted, The CEO, Is We Own Jamun Wine, Mr. Fixxup, and Tek Time fruit flavoured wines.
The certification by GNBS, celebrated at an event on August 28th, 2024, marked a major milestone for John and her company. GNBS Executive Director Trevor Bassoo lauded the growth of the Made in Guyana Standards Mark Programme, which has significantly boosted local businesses by ensuring their products meet high standards. Bassoo emphasised the role of the GNBS and the Government of Guyana in supporting this growth, highlighting their contributions to the success of local enterprises.
John expressed profound gratitude for the GNBS’s role in facilitating a smooth certification process. She acknowledged the support of the Government of Guyana and other agencies like the Small Business Bureau Guyana and Guyana Office for Investment. The certification not only validates the quality of Propa GT Local Wines but also sets a benchmark for future local producers.
Reflecting on her journey, John shared that as the first female student representative at the University of Guyana for entrepreneurship, business, and innovation, she has long been a role model in her community. Now, as a leading figure in the local wine industry, she hopes to continue to inspire others, especially children who see her as a beacon of possibility.
Looking ahead, John is committed to expanding her network and influencing the industry positively. She plans to maintain high standards in production and sales while fostering local engagement. Her vision extends beyond business success; she aims to remain a positive role model and contribute to the broader community.
In her heartfelt address at the certification ceremony, John reminisced about her mother Jenny John, a hardworking entrepreneur who instilled in her the values of perseverance and dedication. John’s journey from a t-shirt business owner to a pioneering winemaker underscores the unexpected paths that lead to fulfilment and success. (Khadidja Ba)
