Propa GT Local Wines, a small producer of fruit wines, last week received the Made in Guyana certification from the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS), following a demanding and rigorous process.
In an exclusive interview with Stabroek News, its founder Abigale John opened up about the challenges, regulatory hurdles and finally the triumph of making a significant mark in the local fruit wine industry. John’s journey into the world of winemaking began in an unconventional manner. Originally, she owned a t-shirt printing and embroidery business, AJ Signs, and was unexpectedly introduced to winemaking by her uncle Aubrey in 2019. Despite initial reservations, John’s entry into the wine industry proved fortuitous. When the COVID-19 pandemic altered consumer behaviours, John pivoted from personalizing t-shirts to promoting wines, seizing the opportunity to bring joy to virtual celebrations and intimate gatherings.
