Sigmas, Her-icanes, Scorchers capture divisional titles

Igloo Hockey Festival

The Saints Hockey Club (SHC) Sigmas (U-17 boys), GCC Her-icanes (Girls U-17), and SHC Scorchers (Mixed U-14) all captured divisional crowns on day two of the Igloo Ice Cream Hockey Festival at the GCC Turf, Bourda.

Playing in the U-17 Boys final on Saturday night, the SHC Sigmas took on their fellow clubmates, the SHC Legends, and required penalties to clinch victory and the title.

After the game saw the two sides playing to a stalemate during regulation time with neither team being able to take an advantage, it was up to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.

The Legends went first with their first penalty missing while the next two found the back of the net, but a miss on the fourth penalty proved to be costly. The Sigmas stepped up and scored the first before missing the second attempt; however, the next two penalties were taken with aplomb as Fayed Mohamed and Ezekiel Moses pushed their side to victory.

Meanwhile, on the distaff side of the category, the GCC Her-icanes also required penalties to capture the title after full-time saw them tied 1-1 with the SHC Sensations.

The home team, GCC, looked set to take the trophy with a 1-0 lead by halftime courtesy of a second-minute Shania Dehnert strike, but the Sensations levelled things in the second half through a goal by Makayla Poole. With neither side able to find a winner in normal time, penalties were again needed to determine a champion, and GCC prevailed 2-1.

Poole and Africo Blackman both missed their penalties for the Sensations, while Dehnert missed GCC’s first try. However, Rebecca Ferreira and Hannah Percival held their nerve to successfully convert and push their side to the win.

Over in the U-14 Mixed category, the SHC Scorchers blazed to a 4-0 win in the final over the SHC Slayers.

Ezekiel Moses notched up a brace, scoring in the sixth and seventh minutes, while Allister Paul and Fayed Mohamed added the finishing touches in the eighth and 10th minutes, respectively, to claim the title.
