A businessman was fatally shot early yesterday morning during a robbery at his home in Adventure, Region Two.
The victim, 61-year-old Ghanraj Bhasmat, also known as `Bharat’, was hit by a bullet while in his washroom.
The robbers initially targeted the Chinese restaurant `Fortune Chinese Restaurant’, located on the ground floor of Bhasmat’s home. The incident occurred around 2:00 am. The Chinese national operating the restaurant managed to escape, prompting the robbers to flee onto the roof of Bhasmat’s property.
When Bhasmat turned on the lights, the gunmen fired a shot, striking him in the left side of his chest.
He collapsed and later succumbed to his injuries. Bhasmat’s son, Rudra Lakeram, recounted receiving a call about the robbery at his father’s home. He noted that the ground floor of the residence had been rented to the Chinese national for over four years.
He also mentioned that the same tenant had been robbed of $200,000 just two weeks earlier. The bandits went away with $1400 from the Chinese before they shot the businessman.
Rita Ragubar, Bhasmat’s wife, tearfully recalled hearing a loud noise and a gunshot while she was in her room. When the assailants fled she found her husband in the washroom where he told her he had been shot, before taking his last breaths.
Bhasmat, a father of three and a well-regarded mechanic, was pronounced dead at the Suddie Public Hospital. His body has been taken to the Suddie Mortuary, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted. The police have visited the scene and are continuing their investigations.
