St. George’s School of Sciences welcomed 81 students yesterday, marking a significant milestone in its recovery from a severe fire that destroyed the original building on July 20, 2022. The blaze, which was caused by an electrical fault, necessitated the complete reconstruction of the school on the same site.

In an exclusive interview with Stabroek News, Headmaster Kevin Williamson outlined the school’s vision for the newly rebuilt facility. He emphasized the institution’s commitment to providing diverse learning environments aimed at fostering academic excellence. “Our goal is to transform the students’ educational experiences through innovative learning environments,” Williamson explained.

The school admits students based on their performance in primary school, specifically requiring high grades in English and Mathematics. Students from the previous school have been reassigned to other educational institutions while the new facility was under construction.

Williamson also addressed the ongoing needs of the school, noting that while most of the new building is complete, minor adjustments are still underway. These include finalizing power connections in some areas and enhancing facilities with audiovisual equipment and lab chemicals. “We are seeking additional support for these aspects to ensure our students have the best possible learning experience,” he said.

The admission criteria for the school include a minimum grade of 80% in English, 65% in Science, and 60% in Mathematics. The catchment area for enrollment extends from Georgetown to Plaisance, and only students meeting these academic standards are considered for admission.

Despite the rebuilding efforts, the school has a full complement of staff according to Williamson and is ready to focus on its core mission: advancing scientific education.
