The first electronic ID card is expected to be issued before the end of the year.
This was disclosed in the Mid Year Review released by the Ministry of Finance on Saturday.
The National eID system has attracted controversy over how it was contracted and on privacy issues. Former Auditor General Anand Goolsarran had said that the deal breached procurement rules.
