Dear Editor,
Two letters on schools caught my attention. One has to do with Carmel Secondary School (SN September 3); while the other has to do with Leonora Secondary School (SN September 3).
In the first case the writer drew attention that the new laboratory at Carmel Secondary School has some ‘defects’ which can impact negatively on the students in particular. The writer alluded to safety features apparently absent in the laboratory and drew references to past infernos of the Christ Church Secondary School and Mahdia Dorm.
It was said, on numerous occasions, following these disasters and others of similar nature, that schools built in future would be outfitted and furnished with all safety features, equipment and accoutrements. So what happened in this case?
The latter letter lamented that the first day of the new school year saw the Leonora Secondary School without a working toilet for the students.
From pit latrines to non-working toilets at a secondary school. What must it take to get the little, but important things, right?
Yours faithfully,
Shamshun Mohamed
