Basketball coach, Dave Causway died in an accident on the Unamco Trail, Upper Berbice River on Tuesday at about 10 am.
The accident involved a car, PAB 1457, which was being driven by Causway. Inquiries revealed that Causway was proceeding north along the trail at an allegedly fast rate and while descending a hill he attempted to negotiate a right turn and lost control of the vehicle. It toppled several times pinning the driver as it came to a halt.
Causway was pulled from the wreck by public-spirited persons and rushed to Kwakwani District Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The body is at Senior Pensioner Mortuary where it awaits a post-mortem examination.
He was a member of the last Guyana junior national championship team, a club champion, a senior national player, and the founder and coach of his own team, KwaKwani Untouchables BC.
The Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association in a statement yesterday said that it mourns the loss of an exceptional soul.
It added, “His love for basketball was great and it was his passion, his life’s work, and he gave his heart and soul to the sport. Guyana has lost not just a great player and coach, but a man whose dedication and energy inspired many. His contributions to basketball in our country are immeasurable, and his legacy will forever be felt on and off the court. Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends during this difficult time. The basketball community shares in your grief and feels the profound sadness of this tremendous loss. Rest in peace, Dave Causway. Your spirit will always remain with us, and your impact on the game will never be forgotten. Keep Balling!”
