A clerk formerly employed by Beepats was yesterday charged with 24 counts of larceny committed over the course of 2023 and this year and amounting to over $15 million.

The accused, 20-year-old Jimmacie Jacob of Unity, La Grange, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where 22 charges were read to her. She was granted bail set at $800,000.

The charges against Jacob allege that between September 25, 2023, and February 2024, in Georgetown, while employed at Beepats, and on 22 separate occasions, she stole a total of $15,486,581, belonging to her employer.

Jacob was represented by attorney-at-law Latchmi Rahamat, who applied for bail, stating that her client was currently unemployed and has cooperated with the police from the beginning. The prosecutor did not object to bail but requested that it be set at a substantial amount.

Rahamat in turn noted that her client had previously been placed on station bail in the amount of $500,000 and requested a similar amount for bail. However, the prosecutor argued that a higher amount was necessary, given the seriousness of the charges.

After consideration, Magistrate McGusty set bail at $800,000, and the matter was adjourned to September 25.
