Rawle Simon, a 29-year-old resident of Red Road, Providence, East Bank Demerara, was on Friday sentenced to two months in jail for violating a Protection Order by hiding in his ex-girlfriend’s car trunk and threatening her with a knife.

Simon appeared before Magistrate Annette Singh at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The incident occurred on September 5, at Lot 21 Regent and Oronoque streets, Georgetown. According to police, Simon hid in the trunk of Donessa McCalmont’s car at her workplace. When McCalmont opened the trunk, Simon threatened her with a knife, prompting her to flee in fear. Simon chased after her, but she managed to find refuge in a nearby house and later reported the incident to the police, resulting in Simon’s arrest.

The Protection Order, issued on June 14 at the Diamond Magistrate’s Court, required Simon to stay at least 500 feet away from McCalmont. His actions violated this order.

Magistrate Singh, considering the gravity of the offence, sentenced Simon to two months in jail.
